We recently completed a kitchen remodel nestled in a sweet little community in Lake Ridge, VA. The neighborhood is full of cute little homes with cedar roofs and each home has a unique siding color and style to it. To me, it’s like a little storybook village. This particular client has a home with the typical 1980’s kitchen. A little space, just 10×12 in scale and your basic builder grade oak cabinets with soffits and sheet vinyl flooring. It needed an update and some TLC! A call was made to Foster and I went to see the client and discuss the project. We talked about likes, dislikes and what together we envisioned for the space.

From the pictures above, you can get a feel for the space as it was when we met. After our initial meeting I came back to my office and worked up a conceptual plan for the new space and what I would present in our next meeting. The main thing we talked about was how to make the small space seem bigger. The first thing I suggested was to remove the soffits…instant enlargement detail. We also wanted to keep the space bright and fresh. We focused on storage and products that would give our client the best value for her investment. The ease of use and care was also big on the list.
When we moved into our design phase I informed and guided her towards particular selections that would not only fit her ideal budget, but would also perform best for her in terms of everyday wear and tear. We went with our Waypoint cabinet line and selected a Shaker style door in a Maple Spice finish to meet her desire to have a wood tone in the space. For the tops we selected the Weybourne color from the Cambria Quartz product line, backed by a simple white subway tile backsplash.
A small single bowl stainless steel sink is now centered below the pass-thru rather being offset as it had been previously. In place of a wasted blind corner cabinet now sits a full size and fully functional lazy susan corner base unit. The existing fridge was reused and remained in the same space, but we designed around the fact that if it were ever to be replaced, she would be able to trade in for a taller unit that fits by simply removing a filler panel. The double oven range which she purchased from our partners, Appliance Connection, was repositioned to allow for a greater work space between it and the sink. One of the biggest transitions to the space was the addition of a center peninsula type island that took place of the old kitchen table. The island not only acts as additional storage, including a built-in trash can and prep space but now unifies the space and gives her that true eat-in kitchen experience. We also addressed the need for even more storage by adding a tall panty unit modified to 15” deep for storing her larger cooking items. The vinyl flooring was replaced with DuraCeramic 16×16 tile in Chateau Gray to tie in the need for some whimsical and soft marble type movement to mimic the countertops.
Top that all off with a nice stacked cabinet crown molding reaching to the ceiling. We added some recessed lighting, on a dimmer, and repositioned her family heirloom Tiffany style pendant light as the focal feature that also served as inspiration for the paint color that was chosen. As you can see below it’s quite the transformation and our client is beyond happy with the results. She is also very impressed with the workmanship, care and attention that was given to her “little ol’ project”. I’m very happy with the way it turned out and hope you will enjoy seeing the finished product as well.
